ESKA OBX event
The first ESKA event of 2007 was held in Kill Devil Hills May 5, and organized by Kitty Hawk Kites. Lots of fun was had by all, but especially the grand masters Ross Fulcher (who basically swept every event he entered) and Russ Buskirk (who was taken to prancing about with his camcorder in hand -- that's going to be some great video). Thanks to Doug Banjak of Kitty Hawk Kites and Joey Hall for putting everything together.

Catching Air
Wow, I haven't seen this kind of air in a closed-deck boat before. (And even on a ski, this is seriously big air).
http://www.kfishsurf.com/ (The site has super-annoying javascript-dependent images, so you need to have JS turned on to view. Most of the pics are boardies, but go to July 12th's pics of the day to see the paddler, Darren Bason, at Newquay in Cornwall.)

OBX Surf Kayak event
OK, so this event was two months ago now. But it was a very fun contest. Doug and Joey did a nice job running it, too. Pics can be found at here and on the East Coast Surf Kayak Assocation's website-slash-blog (at http://www.eskasurf.com).
The event was sponsored, BTW, by Kitty Hawk Kites. And they do kiteboarding stuff, too, for those looking to pick up yet another addictive, gear-intensive watersport.

Random found pic
Wanted to hit the beach today, but didn't. Forecast and cams looked like OK-sized but sloppy storm surf. So it's funny I happened to run across this picture, from adrenalineadventures.net, a site that had great photos and video of surfkayaking events for a while, but seems to have lost interest. This is from the 2001 OBX event. The first day was deadly flat, then a storm blew in an created a washing machine. Check out adrenalineadventures.net and see video featuring the kitesurfer who seemed to be having a much cooler time that day than most of the paddlers.
[Update: It looks like Adrenaline Adventures may have shut down.] BTW, that's actually me, er, courageously trying to figure out how to launch.

KS pic of the day
Just trying out a new posting client. Here's a pic of a glorious surf truck at Linda Mar beach, Pacifica, CA.

Ocean City event

Went to the Ocean City Kayak Surf Festival on Saturday. Waves from Hurricane Fabian were pretty good (though bigger in the morning, and apparently cleaner on Friday afternoon). Chest to head high sets. In fact, the waves were so good and the day so beautiful that I spent much of it paddling, and only took 4 (pretty weak) pics. But you can see them on the photos page.
